I have something for you. Not a thank you, exactly, but we talked about plants before.

[ two, actually ]

Do you want me to bring them to you?

Sure. When's a good time?

Is now good for you?

Yeah.

[ He sends an address. It's an apartment belonging to Wash and Carolina, where Maine has been staying lately. Not long enough for him to think of it as 'his place,' but long enough to be comfortable sharing the address — at least with Larry. ]

I'll be there in 15.

[ and he is, two saplings in soil in a bag slung over one shoulder, cap pulled low in his face, collar up, gloves on. it's too warm for that amount of clothes, but he's had plenty of experience with the discomfort of it, so it hardly registers. it seems almost foolish to give someone plants in a city overrun by it, and yet

here they are. here he is, something like nervousness curled low in his stomach. ]

[ Despite the heat, Maine regularly conceals as much skin as possible. Too wary of the empathy bond. He's more comfortable with it than he used to be, but only with a few people — Larry among them.

And because it's Larry, Maine doesn't cover up as much as he would otherwise. Answers the door wearing a dark, fitted t-shirt instead of a jacket and gloves. His pants are the same as ever — cargo; utilitarian. No boots, though, just socks. He's evidently not planning on going anywhere soon.

Maine shoots Larry a small, brief smile, then steps back to allow Larry to come inside. The apartment has two bedrooms (both doors closed), a kitchen, and a living and dining area. Decorations are sparse: either the residents aren't the type, or it's a relatively new place. ]

[ larry is so unused to touching people that the empathy bond doesn't feature strongly in his thoughts, isn't something he concerns himself with. maine is one of the few people here he's touched at all.

he offers a smile in return, a little nervous, pleased. ]

Hi.

[ maine steps back and larry follows him inside. the decorations are sparse, but larry can hardly judge; he only has a home here at all by the kindness of jyn and cassian.

he glances at his shoes, then back at maine. ] How are you? [ he realised on the way here that he didn't ask, before. ]

Doing all right.

[ The city might be a fucking mess now, but Maine feels better than he did before the invasion. After all, combat is where he feels most at home. The constant fighting him move past the worst of his grief. Helped him feel more like Agent Maine.

And it helps, too, that he has people willing to support him — although Maine won't admit as much aloud. Helps that someone like Larry wants to come by. Maine doesn't connect with people easily, but when he does, those connections are important to him.

He tilts his head toward the kitchen as he asks, ]

Drink?

[ larry nods, stepping further into the apartment, a little toward the kitchen.

the city is a mess now and larry doesn't like combat at all, too many bad memories and too much guilt, but that difference makes him no less appreciative of the fact that maine?

maine is damn good at it.

(saved his ass, and not just proverbially.) ]

I'd love one.

[ the plants are in a backpack, he busies himself with getting them out. ]

I couldn't decide what would suit you best, so I got you more than one.

[ Maine nods once, then heads into the kitchen as Larry digs into his backpack. There are several options for drinks — just as there were several options for plants.

He hums in acknowledgment, smiling a little as he opens the fridge and leans down to check what's available. ]

Beer, juice, water?

[ there's a pause as larry mentally calculates whether asking for a beer would be all right, whether it wouldn't be weird —but maine offered and he's not been very judgmental thus far. ]

Beer.

[ said while he finally follows into the kitchen, a plant in each hand. ]

[ Maine doesn't consider it strange at all. Then again, a single beer barely touches Maine's alcohol tolerance. Part of that has to do with how big he is. Another factor is how much he drank while in the military, and, to a lesser extent, in the station. It's only been since he arrived in New Amsterdam that Maine has significantly tapered off.

That said, he grabs a beer for himself as well as one for Larry. Closes the fridge and turns, a drink in each hand, to find Larry with a plant in each of his. ]

[ larry doesn't actually know what his alcohol tolerance is these days. did the negative spirit affect it, before? it's not like he drank often to begin with; he still doesn't, know. but a beer sounds good right now.

so maine's got a beer in each hand and larry has a plant in each hand and somehow, they'll need to exchange those. ]

Let me just-

[ he sets both of the plants down on the nearest flat surface, fussing with them for a moment as much as one can fuss over plants, before turning back to maine. ]

Those are for you.

[ and his hands are free now for the beer.

one of the plants is a white and purple orchid, the other a spider plant. something colourful and something easy to take care of. ]

[ Another little smile steals across Maine's lips. Part amusement as they figure out how to juggle items, part pleasure at seeing the plants. They both have white, in stripes or in the flowers themselves, and he's glad that Larry remembered that.

He hands off one of the beers once Larry's hands are free. Then he turns his attention to the plants, studying them with his head tilted slightly to one side. ]

Thank you. [ That, first and foremost. Only then does he ask, ] What're they called?

No, thank you. [ seriously. but despite that, it isn't a real argument and there's obvious pleasure in larry's tone. ]

This one's an orchid. [ pointing at the one plant, then the other ] And this one's a spider plant. Chlorophytum comosum.

[ Although he doubts he'll ever use the plant's scientific name, Maine memorizes it all the same. However, he's more interested in the other one. Not because he likes it better, but because, ]

Your favorite. [ He reaches for the orchid but stops short of touching its petals. Seems like that would be a bad idea. Seems delicate. ] Right?

[ Unless Larry's favorite plants aren't orchids in general, but a specific type. ]

Yeah.

[ it's such a small thing, but — ] You remembered.

[ larry doesn't know why that hits him the way it does. maybe it is because of maine, tall and broad and with anger burning just beneath his skin, is so careful with the plant. ]

[ With his fingertips still hovering beside the orchid's fragile petals, Maine raises his eyes to look at Larry again. His expression is muted, as it almost always is, but he appears faintly curious. ]

Of course.

[ Larry told Maine one of his favorite things. Maine likes Larry, so he memorized the detail, tucking "orchids" away in his mind like intel gathered on a mission. To Maine, the fact that he remembers doesn't strike him as significant: it was just the thing to do.

Realizing that he's standing with a closed beer, Maine withdraws his hand, opens it, and then takes a swig. ]

Need attention, right?

[ Said as he tilts his head toward the orchid, indicating it without taking his eyes from Larry. ]

Yes. [ larry nods, busying himself with his own bear for a long moment, aware of maine's gaze on him and unsure whether he'd wish that maine would look away or keep looking.

(once upon a time, he'd have known the answer to that. before the accident, before he looked like this, like he does now, burnt and horrible, a monster on the outside as much as on the inside.) ]

They need a lot of humidity and water, but the soil shouldn't be too wet. It's- you can test with your finger or by lifting the pot to see how heavy it feels.

Oh, and no direct sunlight, but a lot of indirect light.

[ briefly, he thinks whether maybe that's why he likes orchids so much. they need light, but they can't be in it directly or they'll scorch. he feels like that sometimes, too. like getting too close to the sun (other people, life) will burn him.

maine is still looking at him and larry wishes —that he could hide. that he could look the way he used to, handsome on the outside at least. ]

[ Physical appearances mean very little to Maine. He can recognize beauty, sure, but that recognition tends to coincide with his feelings towards the person. If he likes someone, he usually finds something to catch his eye — but he doesn't have to. Shit, he dated someone who didn't have a body for months.

And because he likes Larry, Maine doesn't fixate on the scars. He just watches Larry's body language. Listens to Larry's words.

He gives a thoughtful hum, then looks back at the plants. Lots of humidity, water, indirect light… ]

Will find good spot. Near window, not on sill?

[ And he looks back to Larry, his head tilted questioningly. Does that sound right? ]

Near a window is good, just not next to a heater. [ do they still have heaters like that in the future? who knows.

physical appearances mean very little to maine, but they mean a lot to larry —appearances in general mean a lot to larry. for so long, he'd kept up appearances, knowing full well that he could lose everything the moment someone so much as looked too closely, the moment he could no longer maintain a perfect facade. maybe it was no wonder that it all came crumbling down around him.

appearances matter so much and maine is solid and strong and looking at larry, caring about plants because larry cares and —

larry wants, so badly, not to look the way he looks. not to be this scarred and broken creature he's become. (there's something else now, too, a slither of attraction curling low in his stomach.)

he wants— and for a moment, his chest flaring blue, his appearance changes. flickers, then settles, unscarred and undeniably handsome, a full head of brown hair, a little mussed. for a moment, he looks the way he used to.

it won't last, can't, but for a moment, it holds. ]
